About the Book

Most teams struggle to deliver large IT projects on time and on budget. Timelines slip. Stakeholders misalign. Scope expands unchecked. In healthcare environments, where implementations directly affect patient care, clinical workflows, and regulatory compliance, the cost of project failure is not just financial. It is organizational and, at times, clinical.

Getting the Job Done by Kevin Torf addresses this challenge head-on. Drawing on more than 40 years of healthcare IT leadership, including large-scale infrastructure deployments, EHR implementations, and enterprise technology transformations for major health systems, Kevin introduces the P.R.O.J.E.C.T.S. framework: a hybrid-agile methodology built for the real-world constraints that standard project management frameworks overlook.

The book delivers 100 practical, bite-sized tips organized around eight core components of effective IT project management. Each chapter is grounded in real-world case studies from healthcare, government, and commercial IT sectors, making the concepts immediately applicable regardless of project size or industry. The format is designed for busy IT professionals, readable in short sessions, actionable in the next standup.

Written for IT project managers, PMO directors, CIOs, healthcare tech leaders, and team leads navigating their first large-scale implementation, the book is equally valuable for first-time project leads and 20-year veterans who want a structured, repeatable approach. If you manage IT projects and need a proven framework for delivering results, not just managing tasks, this book was written for you.

Where This Was Tested

Written after the cutover, not in the classroom

Most project management books are written from the classroom. This one was written after the cutover. Kevin Torf developed the P.R.O.J.E.C.T.S. framework while leading hospital network cloud migrations, EHR implementations and enterprise infrastructure programs where a missed date meant disrupted patient care and regulatory exposure. The 100 tips in the book are the ones that held up under that pressure.

The Framework

What is the P.R.O.J.E.C.T.S. Framework?

The P.R.O.J.E.C.T.S. framework is a hybrid-agile project management system built around eight essential components of IT delivery. Developed through four decades of real-world implementation experience, it bridges the discipline of traditional project management with the adaptability of agile, giving IT leaders a flexible, repeatable approach that works across healthcare, government, and commercial sectors. Together, these eight components form the backbone of every T2Group engagement.

Together these 8 components form a flexible approach that works across healthcare, government, and commercial IT projects.

The Core Idea

Position over supervision

The book borrows from team sports. When every player knows their position, the coach does not need to chase each mistake with a whistle. The gaps reveal themselves and the team closes them. The framework applies the same idea to projects: define positions clearly, give people ownership of their outcomes, and spend the manager's time on alignment instead of inspection.
